Unique features: The tropical gar can grow up to 4 ft. They resemble long-nose gars in color and marks but you can tell the difference because tropical gars have smaller, broader snouts.

Binomial Name: The tropical gar’s binomial name is atractosteus tropicus.

Feeding Habits: Tropical gars eat mainly cichlids and other fish but also eat copepods, insects, and plant materials.

Spawning: They usually reach the ability to spawn at about 13-15 inches total length. They enter shallow lakes on the onset of dry season, spawning as rain creates flooding. Big groups form to spawn in large masses of gelatin.

Location: Tropical gars live in rivers, streams, and lakes.
