The Spotted Gar                                                    (Lepisosteus Oculatus)

 

 

 

Unique Features: The spotted gar has round, dark spots all over its gills. It has a very strong snout with sharp teeth. It can usually grow up to three feet. It usually weighs about eight pounds. Its top jaw is bigger then its lower jaw.

 

Binomial Name: The spotted gar’s binomial name is Lepisosteus Oculatus.

 

Feeding Habits: The spotted gar eats many fish smaller than itself such as bass and bream.

 

Spawning: The spotted gar lays eggs in April in flowing bodies of water.

 

Hunting Strategies: The spotted gar catches its prey by swimming fast when it sees prey and when it gets close enough, it opens its mouth with the prey inside, and quickly snaps its mouth shut.

 

Location: Spotted gars live in peaceful, quiet, lakes, streams and swamps with plenty of plants.
