The Short-nose Gar (Lepisosteus Platostomus)

Unique Features: 9-10 mm at birth. They can be about 80 cm high. Otherwise they resemble the long-nose gar.
Binomial Name: The short-nose gar’s binomial name is Lepisosteus Platostomus.
Feeding Habits: Young eat a variety of items from very small crustaceans to different life stages of insects and other fish. They eat more at night than day.
Spawning: Short-nose gars spawn in shallow water among the grass and underwater weeds and prefer grassy sloughs as spawning grounds. They have eggs that are big, green-colored, and poisonous to warm-blooded, vertebrates including humans. Short-nose gars do not care for their babies.
Hunting Strategies: Short-nose gar’s hunting style is usually stalking rather than sudden chasing. Short-nose Gars wait, eating the most available food.
Location: Natural Habitats of the short-nose gar include lakes, swamps, and the calm pools and creeks and rivers that lead to bigger ones (backwater). They are usually found near plants and underwater logs.
